Unifor Extends Negotiations with Ford

Published: September 19th 2023

Unifor, the union representing Canadian autoworkers, has decided to extend negotiations with Ford Motor Co. after receiving what it called a "substantive offer" from the company. The decision comes as a relief for the thousands of workers who were facing the possibility of a strike.

Unifor had set a strike deadline for 11:59 pm on September 21st, but after receiving the offer, the union's leadership decided to extend the deadline to allow for further negotiations. The two sides have been in talks since early September, with the union pushing for job security and investments in Canadian plants.

Jerry Dias, the president of Unifor, stated that the union is "encouraged" by the offer, which includes new products, investments, and the potential to bring battery-electric vehicle production to Ontario. Dias further added that the offer has the potential to "transform" Ford's Oakville Assembly Complex.

The Oakville Assembly Complex, located just outside of Toronto, employs about 4,200 workers and produces the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus SUVs. The facility has been at risk of closure, as Ford had previously announced plans to shift production of the Edge to Mexico. However, the new offer from Ford could secure the future of the plant and protect thousands of jobs.

While specific details of the offer have not been made public, Unifor has emphasized that its primary concern is securing long-term commitments from Ford, ensuring that the company invests in the Canadian plants and protects jobs. The union has been fighting to secure future vehicle production for Oakville and Ford's engine plant in Windsor, Ontario.

Unifor's negotiations with Ford are part of a larger pattern bargaining strategy, where the union selects a target company and negotiates a contract that will set the pattern for the industry. The union has already reached a tentative agreement with Fiat Chrysler and will use that deal as a benchmark for negotiations with General Motors, which has been chosen as the next target.

With the extension of negotiations, there is hope that a deal between Unifor and Ford can be reached before the strike deadline. Union members are scheduled to vote on the tentative agreement with Fiat Chrysler on Sunday, which will provide further guidance for the ongoing talks with Ford.

The outcome of these negotiations will have significant implications not only for the Canadian autoworkers represented by Unifor but also for the broader automotive industry in the country. A successful deal that secures investments and protects jobs would be a much-needed boost for the Canadian economy, particularly in the midst of the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the negotiations continue, both Unifor and Ford will need to find common ground and make compromises to reach an agreement that satisfies the needs of both parties. The extended negotiations and the substantive offer from Ford indicate a willingness to find a solution that benefits all stakeholders involved.
